Conservation Bike Crew Coming Soon

The Urban Roots Conservation Program is planning a creative way to include health for our youth interns as well as our environment — a bike crew!

Typically, the conservation corps takes a van (or two) from location to location as they work on invasive plant removal, native plantings, rain garden installations and restoration of a tamarack bog and more. With the creation of a bike crew, our youth interns will be able to use the Saint Paul bike paths to navigate between locations.

We’ve already started collecting bicycles for our new crew, but there are more needed! We are looking for 10 ‘gently used’ adult bicycles for our youth bicycle crew. As a reminder, all of our youth are paid minimum wage and spend the summer on multiple restoration projects. Any suggestions about other resources for bicycles or accompanying gear (helmets, locks, safety vests, etc.) are much appreciated.

Please contact our Conservation Program Manager, David, at 651-228-7073 or by emailing drittenhouse@urbanrootsmn.org with any donations or questions. Thank you!

Our Salad Served at Ward 6

Our creative youth interns have come up with a salad recipe so enticing that it caught the attention of a local restaurant. East Side eatery, Ward 6, will be serving one of this season’s Roots for the Home Team salads on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8. Youth from Urban Roots originally created the salad for the baseball crowd, but Ward 6 – in support of Urban Roots and East Side youth — is featuring the Big Bang Seoul salad, a Korean-inspired salad featuring several of the vegetables from our seven urban gardens.

Some youth from the program will come for dinner at Ward 6 on Sunday, June 8 after they’ve worked at the Twins home game at Target Field. Stop by to meet our youth “celebs” at 5:30pm on Sunday.
