Cook Fresh Program Coordinator

Part-time, year-round position

Urban Roots, Saint Paul, MN

Position Description:

Urban Roots, a 48-year-old nonprofit organization, seeks a part-time, year round, dedicated person to execute a dynamic cooking program leading teen crews in seasonal food prep and conducting healthy food initiatives for the Cook Fresh Program. The youth internship program is a paid work-skill development program in which teen participants learn work and life skills, practical food preparation skills, explore careers & college, and engage in opportunities in: entrepreneurship, cooking, public speaking and social/environmental advocacy, www.urbanrootsmn.org.

The Cook Fresh Program Coordinator works under the direction of the Senior Program Director with the following goals, responsibilities and activities:

Kitchen production:

-Execute summer lunch program that incorporates seasonal garden produce with leadership from recruited local chefs & professionals

-Execute seasonal food processing goals for developing value-added goods for sale along with preparation for cooking programs & events

-Prepare seasonal food items for community based and fundraising events

Youth education & training:

-Facilitate youth internship trainings in applied, fresh seasonal cooking skills, professional food preparation, food & entrepreneurship curriculum, along with basic job skill practices

-Direct youth interns in the planning & execution of a summer lunch program that incorporates seasonal garden produce

-Supervise youth and oversee participation at the Roots for the Home Team salad cart at Target Field

-Process intern application forms, attendance, timesheets in coordination with Administration, Accounting, and City of St Paul, Right Track staff

Program development:

-Ensure program activities and goals meet specified objectives with oversight by the Market Garden Program Manager and Program Director

-Evaluate and report, maintain detailed records on program related activities and youth development content

Qualifications/Desired Experience:

-Experience working in a commercial kitchen, restaurant kitchen and/or similar food preparation experience on a large scale

-Knowledge of cooking & teaching methods utilizing seasonal ingredients

-Experience supervising and mentoring youth

-Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds, bilingual a plus

-Good written and oral communication skills along with a basic knowledge of computer software

-Experience developing & facilitating engaging hands-on activities, tours and workshops

-Self-starting, collaborative, ability to multi-task and meet deadlines

-Valid Driver’s License

-Enthusiastic, creative, committed, flexible and fun

Compensation: $16.50-$18.50/hr DOE, plus paid holiday, vacation and sick time. This position is part-time, 24hrs/wk with a desired start date of Mid-March. This position requires flexibility with some weekend, holiday and evening hours.

Market Garden Crew Lead

Full-time, Seasonal position

Urban Roots, Saint Paul, MN

Position Description:

Urban Roots, a 48-year-old nonprofit organization, seeks a full-time, seasonal, dedicated person to execute urban vegetable farm operations and lead teen work crews and volunteers as part of its Market Garden Youth Internship program. The program engages youth in sustainable urban agriculture through the growing and marketing of produce, flowers, herbs, and other products. The youth internship program is a paid work-skill development program in which teen participants learn work and life skills, practical crop production methods, explore careers & college, and engage in opportunities in: entrepreneurship, urban farming, public speaking and social/environmental advocacy, www.urbanrootsmn.org.

The Market Garden Crew Lead works under the direction of the Market Garden Program Manager for the successful operation of urban farm production sites and the goals and activities of the Market Garden Program. This involves working independently and in collaboration with the Market Garden Program Manager for the following responsibilities:

-Execute daily maintenance of six food production sites to include; carrying out garden plans, planting, organic weed, pest & disease management, harvest distribution & tracking, operating equipment, irrigation systems and other seasonal maintenance

-Provide daily supervision, training and crew management of teenage interns in field work, pack shed operations, farmers market stand and other garden related projects

-Participation in program related events and shared weekend/holiday watering duties

This position runs mid-April to mid-October. Full time hours (40/week) required from mid-April to mid-October, with a desired start date of April 3rd. This position requires flexibility with some rotating weekend, holiday and evening hours.

Qualifications/Desired Experience:

-Experience working as a field-crew member for at least 2 seasons on a vegetable production farm

-Experience prepping and selling produce for CSA, Wholesale and Farmers Market

-Knowledge operating small equipment and tools

-Experience leading crews of youth and/or volunteers in field tasks

-Ability to lift 40 lbs. on a regular basis

-Valid Driver’s License, good driving record for transportation of crews to work sites

-Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds

-Enthusiastic, independent, flexible and committed

Compensation: $14/hour, paid holidays
