Urban Roots Produce – In Ice Cream!

This summer we are thrilled to announce we will be offering a flavored ice cream as an add-on to our CSA utilizing Urban Roots youth-grown produce. Ice cream flavor maven Ashlee Olds of Sweet Science Ice Cream visited Urban Roots to meet with our youth to taste ice cream and brainstorm new flavors. Some of the ideas included chocolate beet, strawberry mint and cucumber melon sorbet.

Ashlee is the owner of the start-up Sweet Science Ice Cream. She is a native Saint Paul Eastsider and currently sells her ice cream at Verdant Tea in Minneapolis. She uses mostly local ingredients in her ice creams and adds absolutely no fillers or preservatives. The result is delicious!

After the flavor brainstorm, Ashlee took the ideas back to the kitchen to start experimenting. Later this month youth will taste test again and choose several Urban Roots flavors for this summer’s CSA. The ice cream featuring Urban Roots produce will exclusively be sold at our CSA pick-ups and will be available for purchase Thursdays from 4:30pm-6:30pm outside Urban Roots’ new office at 463 Maria Avenue in Saint Paul. You don’t need to be a CSA member to try the tasty Lemongrass Ginger Bark ice cream!

Executive Director Transition

The Urban Roots Board of Directors would like to announce the departure of our Executive Director, Tamara Downs Schwei, to work for the Homegrown Minneapolis Initiative at the city of Minneapolis. Tamara has been with the organization for seven whirlwind years. She has presided over many changes and developments, one of the most significant being the increase in the size of programming. We are proud and grateful for her service to our organization. We all wish her well in her new ventures and hope she continues to stay connected. We will miss the high energy she brought to Urban Roots.

Tamara leaves the organization on a strong footing with a strong and involved Board and staff. The Board will begin immediately to find and have a replacement by the beginning of the organization’s next fiscal year (September 1, 2014).

In the interim, the responsibilities of Executive Director will be shared by two prominent local food advocates: Glen Hill and Patsy Noble. Glen will be principally responsible for the fiscal aspects of the organization. Patsy, who has worked with Urban Roots for several years, will oversee the programming operations. The Board is confident the combined talent and energy of these two people will sustain the organization through the busy interim period. Patsy can be contacted at Glen can be contacted at as of May 7. Both are available by phone at 651-228-7073.

We appreciate and look forward to your continued engagement with and support of our vital work with youth in our community.

Photos of our Planting Day

We are so thankful for all of the volunteers who helped make our Earth Day Celebration planting day a huge success! Thank you. We were able to break ground and get our spring planting season well on its way. We planted kale, lettuce, carrots, beets, shallots, swiss chard, cabbage, sorrel and bachelor’s button. Together we cleaned up the beds, weeded, layed compost, turned the soil, built three potato towers and mulched. Enjoy the photos of our fun morning.
