Position Description:
Urban Roots, a 46-year-old nonprofit organization, seeks a full-time, seasonal, dedicated person to provide hands-on gardening education, training and management of teenage interns, school children, and volunteers as part of its Market Garden Youth Internship program. The program engages youth in sustainable urban agriculture through the growing and marketing of fresh organic produce, flowers, herbs, and other products. Youth interns develop work and life skills, explore careers, learn about crop production, entrepreneurship and nutrition, and practice environmental stewardship.
The Market Garden Program Supervisor works under the direction of the Market Garden Program Manager for the successful operation of urban food production sites and the goals and activities of the Market Garden Program. This involves working independently and in collaboration with the Market Garden Program Manager for the following responsibilities:
• Assisting with garden prep, planting and maintenance of vegetable, herb and flower crop production spring through fall
• Providing daily supervision, training and crew management of teenage interns in garden work, Community Supported Agriculture operations, education and other garden related projects
• Providing hands-on garden education for youth interns & school-aged youth
• Shared oversight of evening CSA pickups, newsletter production, program events, farmers market stand and weekend/holiday watering duties
• Assisting with information management; garden & youth related data, sales & distribution tracking and program evaluation
This position runs mid-April to mid-October. Full time hours (40/week) required from mid-April to mid-October, with a desired start date of April 13th. This position requires flexibility with some rotating weekend, holiday and evening hours.
Qualifications/Desired Experience:
• Experience with sustainable food production focused on urban gardening or agriculture
• Experience teaching, supervising and mentoring youth and volunteers
• Experience prepping and selling produce through a CSA program or farmers market
• Ability to lift 40 lbs. on a regular basis
• Valid Driver’s License for transportation of crews to work sites
• Must pass criminal background check
• Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds
• Minimum of 2 years college coursework, related coursework preferred
• Enthusiastic, creative, flexible and committed
Compensation: $13/hour
