River Stories 2021 Project

Viewing and Reception:
Thursday 23rd, 5:30-7:00 PM
967 Payne Ave.
All are welcome!

We wrapped up our third wonderful year of gathering community river stories with our youth interns and in partnership with the other media group.

The ongoing collective intention of this project is to expand the conversation of environmentalism through the arts.  We believe that Saint Paul’s East Side communities are leaders in the local environmental movement though may not identify their relationship to the natural world as environmentalism. We propose conversation and culture building as a way to gather and amplify approaches and lifeways within our community. And, by listening to our community perhaps they shape for us more dynamic and inclusive language for the relationship and care of the natural world. The framework for the project was established in a 2019 pilot through an iterative youth directed process. The curriculum for the project was further refined in 2020 and 2021 and is highly adaptable to be directed and guided by each new group of youth

2021 project: After an overview and a visit to the Mississippi River this year’s group showed a keen interest in learning more about the professional field. They interviewed an excellent roster of folks working in the outdoor and environmental profession. The reflections of those conversations were then rendered as a series of individual multi-media canvases that when connected from the Mississippi River as it flows through Saint Paul.
