The Water Cycle and You

Students will learn about the water cycle and how an urban environment can change the water cycle. They will also learn about non-point source pollution and identify ways they can help reduce pollution impacts on water.

❄️ Youth Programming Updates: Root & Roam ❄️

This week, we visited Mni Owe Sni and Mnigaga/Wakpa Cistinna (Coldwater Spring/Minnehaha Falls & Creek), a sacred Dakota site, since we were unable to go 2 weeks ago due to cold weather.

🐦 We were immediately greeted by a Pileated Woodpecker, the largest woodpecker in MN.
🌞 The sun provided warmth as we walked through the prairie during golden hour.
🐕 We made a dog friend during our walk.
🧊 The frozen falls and ice were a spectacle.
💧The song of water could still be heard beneath the ice in open areas. #waterislife always.

There is nothing quite like being present, in place, immersing and connecting with the human and more-than-human friends there. 🫶🏼

Afterschool shifts were cancelled earlier in the week due to coooold weather 🥶 Youth will have the chance to continue their willow exploration and creation by putting the finishing touches on their lanterns this week.

❄️ Youth Programming Updates: Root & Roam ❄️

This week, we went to Tamarack Nature Center to learn and practice orienteering without electronics. We split into teams and competed against each other to navigate and explore the winter landscape while only using maps and landmarks. Being greeted by a Barred Owl hoot in the distance + a pack of deer were a bonus.✨

@capitolregionwatershed are long-time partners of ours & we always appreciate a visit and tour of their lovely building. We had hot chocolate and cake, experimented with freezing ramen, making bird feeder sun catchers, and blowing bubbles in the cold. We also learned about the important work they do, as well as how the habitat restoration work our Conservation interns do, benefits the water + all the lives that depend on the waters in our community. #Waterislife

Urban Roots is seeking a detail-oriented and organized individual to fill the role of Bookkeeper and Administrative Assistant.

This hybrid position will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records and providing comprehensive administrative support to ensure the smooth operation of our programs and initiatives.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in bookkeeping and administrative functions, with a passion for supporting youth development and community engagement.

This is a full time position of 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year.

❄️Youth programming updates: Rooted Creations❄️

This week, Rooted Creations continued deepening our relationships with community & each other.

We were joined by the East Side Environmental Justice Group (based out of @east.side.freedom.library) to discuss environmental health on the East Side and how collective art can amplify and promote justice. Afterwards, Urban Roots staff shared their knowledge of book-binding and zine-making, and we got creative thinking about how issues we care about can be communicated in these formats.💡

We also continued work on our recyclable sculptures by sharing ideas with each other and beginning to paper mache! These sculptures are focused on exploring individual self expression. 🐋📎🎨

This is our first year growing basket willow and we’ve been having a lot of fun with it!

Early this winter we harvested from all 8 varieties (300+ plants). From it, we’ve prepared hundreds of cuttings that you can now purchase on our website for local pick-up at our office in Saint Paul. These tall, perennial shrubs are low maintenance, make for great windbreaks, prevent soil erosion and give the added bonus of providing you with otherwise expensive weaving material to meet your winter crafting needs. Check out the shop on our website to learn more about available varieties and some willow-growing basics.

On top of preparing cuttings for propagation, we’ve cured our willow rods for weaving. This Thursday we’ll be making hanging lanterns, woven soap trays and woven cooling trays with our youth interns. We’re excited to be incorporating plants that we cultivate on the farm into our winter programming!

In Root & Roam, we’re continuing our journey of relationship building with place, human, and more-than-human communities through outdoor (sometimes indoor!) work and exploration.

This week, we spread seeds at Mounds Park and Willowbrook (part of Pigs Eye Regional Park), which are 2 Conservation Program worksites. Seed sowing in winter is an essential part of the restoration process that mimics natural stratification. We were also gifted by the beautiful sunset and night skies!

Due to cold weather, we couldn’t visit Mni Owe Sni (Coldwater Springs) & Mnigaga/Wakpa Cistinna (Minnehaha Falls & Creek). Instead, we discussed the significances of these locations and watched an inspiring documentary about this sacred Dakota site. We also drew pictures influenced by what we watched / the work we do at Urban Roots.
