Market Garden Youth Coordinator

About Us: Urban Roots is a 55-year-old nonprofit with the mission to cultivate and empower youth through nature, healthy food and community. We do that by providing job training and leadership skills development to over 80 young people aged 14-24 who live or go to school on the East Side of Saint Paul. Position Summary:

Urban Roots is seeking an experienced youth worker who is passionate about urban farming to join our Market Garden team for the 2025 season as a Youth Coordinator.

Schedule: The position runs 40 hours per week from the beginning of April through October. Infrequent shifts will be scheduled outside your regular hours for events.

Compensation: Compensation: $20.23/hr, 4 paid holidays, and sick time accrued at 1hr/every 30 hrs worked

Skills and Experience:

• Youth Leadership & Training:
  • Lead daily work shifts with youth.
  • Facilitate youth internship training in resilient food systems
  • Model excellent work ethic and motivate the youth interns to perform to high standards and accomplish challenging tasks.
• Program Support:
  • Collaborate with program staff to adapt and improve programming
  • Ensure program activities and goals meet specified objectives as determined by the planning team and administration.
  • Assist with program-related office work and record keeping when needed.
• Community outreach
  • Assist with leading community-based education events within the scope of the Market Garden program.
    • Volunteer events
    • Field trips and service learning groups
    • Community events
• Assisting with farm work
  • Assisting with on-farm work is essential to learn the work in order to be a leader in the field, when not leading groups, Youth Coordinator will most often be working on the farm with other staff or independently
• Assisting with general operating and programming aspects of Urban Roots as a whole.
• Other duties as assigned within the scope of work.

Qualifications:

• 2 years of experience in youth work
• Experience with outdoor education or farming
• Knowledge of youth development best practices
• Excitement and passion for working with youth and teaching all ages
• Familiarity with the St Paul East Side

• Passionate about connecting with people and building community
• An appreciation of diversity in language, culture, religion, gender and race
• Excellent communication skills
• Self-directed, curious and passionate
• Able to work long hours outdoors in adverse conditions
• Flexible and adaptable
• Background check required
• Driver’s license with proven history of safe driving required. Experience driving large vans, trailers or tractors strongly preferred.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds
