Urban Roots, formerly Community Design Center of Minnesota, was incorporated in 1969 as a 501(c)3. Over the years, we have provided a range of community development services with a common thread of empowerment, engagement and innovation. Since 1996, Urban Roots has provided paid internships to youth on the East Side of Saint Paul. Youth interns develop leadership, entrepreneurial, and life skills through our Market Garden, Conservation, and Cook Fresh Programs. Each year, up to 90 youth interns, ages 14-24, participate in our progressive, tiered programming, connecting to one another and to the world around them.
I believe every youth should have the opportunity to go through a program like this because it really opens up youth to each other and to things they are scared to try.

Urban Roots is a place where you feel included, it’s a place where you feel welcomed, it’s a place where you feel like you’re a part of something big.

I enjoyed working in 6 different gardens at Urban Roots! I’m proud of myself that I put in a lot of effort to make all of our gardens the best looking in town!

The CSA was full of vibrant, fresh produce and we were more than happy to be members and support such a wonderful organization.
