October Updates

As the seasons change, so do the day-to-day operations here at Urban Roots. Market Garden is preparing the gardens for winter, Conservation is harvesting seeds to plant later, and Cook Fresh interns are learning about food preservation as we use up the rest of the produce harvested this year.

We were happy to host everyone in our new space at the annual fundraiser, but we haven’t officially moved in just yet. There’s still lots of packing and planning to be done. We are eager to get the space ready for our big move, stay tuned for updates.

Urban Roots In The News

Star Tribune recently released a piece about suburban communities where residents have started using their space to grow produce, and they highlighted Urban Roots’ involvement in the Grow Burnsville project. Read the Article.

River Stories

We wrapped up our third wonderful year of gathering community river stories with our youth interns in partnership with Great River Passage and the other media group. The ongoing collective intention of this project is to expand the conversation of environmentalism through the arts. This year’s group interviewed an excellent roster of folks working in the outdoor and environmental profession. The reflections of those conversations were then rendered as a series of individual multi-media canvases that when connected from the Mississippi River as it flows through St Paul.

Market Garden

Our youth interns recently installed our new Children’s Garden in the expanded Rivoli Bluffs Farm and Restoration Site. We are so excited to begin welcoming elementary school groups to this special garden that was made just for them!

Mobile Demonstration Kitchen

We now have our Cook Fresh Mobile Demonstration Kitchen. It is a fully-outfitted kitchen on wheels that we will be able to bring with us into the community. It will allow us to demonstrate recipes with our produce and distribute meals that are ready-to-eat to community members. Hill Tribe Station, along with some youth interns, tested the kitchen out at our “On The Move” event on September 30, and the food tasted great!

Art at Urban Roots

This week our Conservation interns made very realistic paper flowers with artist Anna Gaseitsiwe who specializes in making paper botanical sculptures. The finished products look great – thank you Anna for the fun workshop! Check out more of her work here.
