Start of a New Season
Summer programming has wrapped up for the year as our youth interns head back to school, but things are just as busy as ever for us! The farms are bursting with fall crops ready for harvest, and staff is getting ready for our big move.
Urban Roots in the News
This past week WCCO partnered with Xcel Energy to highlight Twin Cities non-profits during their week of service. The news crew came by the Rivoli Bluffs Farm & Restoration Site to talk to interns about their experience with Urban Roots and learn more about our mission. READ MORE
Rivoli Ready Updates
In March, we launched our Rivoli Ready campaign to help raise money to expand our Rivoli site. The support we received was incredible, and we are excited to bring you some updates on how the space has changed!
Laying Down the Groundwork
Conservation crew interns helped prep the area by removing invasive species. Once cleared, Garden interns were able to add compost to the land and plant winter squash. The Indigenous Medicine Garden, pictured below, was also planted. In September and October, we will build raised beds so that perennials have the chance to overwinter and start strong in the spring! We hope to get youth, children, and our community involved in the planting.
Children’s Garden
Patsy Noble, former Executive Director and talented garden planner, is working with us to bring our vision for the Children’s Garden to life. There will be a sensory garden featuring plants to smell, touch, and taste, as well as a “big dig” area for kids who can’t resist digging in the dirt! Jaclyne, the Education Manager, has already started creating partnerships with schools in the area to bring students out to the space.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Rivoli Ready campaign!
National Public Lands Day
Urban Roots is joining the National Park Service, Mississippi Park Connection, REI, Conservation Corps MN & IA, the MN DNR, and volunteers to plant nearly 300 trees around Pig’s Eye Regional Park on Sept 25. Let’s thank them for their work!
