There’s still time to apply for two positions on the Market Garden team ☀️ If you like to spend your summers outside, connecting with others and growing food for and with community, then this might be the job for you!

The Market Garden team is looking to hire two seasonal positions that run from April-October. The Youth Coordinator will help implement our summer youth program, and the Outreach Coordinator with share Urban Root’s story while running farmers market stands, attending community events and leading volunteer groups. Both positions pay $20.23/hr.

❄️Youth programming updates: Rooted Creations❄️

This month we’ll focus on deepening our connections with nature & community through self expression and hands-on-learning!

Yesterday we kicked off the first session of February’s Rooted Creations track! We had fun creating creatures, reflecting, and beginning the first phase of a sculpture project using recycled materials. Follow along as we share projects inspired by the work we do at Urban Roots ✂️🎨

❄️ Youth Programming Updates: Exploration ❄️

This week we visited @history_theatre to learn about different careers in the theater realm. We appreciate the intentional, local storytelling that takes place there, enjoyed the light show, and walking through the stage set!

We also hung out with our peers in the Public Speaking track to cheer them on during their final speeches. Scroll to the last video to hear a song a youth wrote about comforting a tree 🫶🏼💖

🌱Happy Friday! We are getting the new year star

🌱Happy Friday! We are getting the new year started strong with a few upcoming workshops featuring our partners over at Dayton's Bluff Public Library and Metro State Library. We had so much fun at last year's Seed Sowing Workshop that we are bringing it back and making it a series!

Wednesday, February 12th will be focused on native perennials and cold stratification, and Wednesday, March 5th will be more focused on starting seeds that do not require cold stratification such as annual flowers, grasses, and some native forbs.

Space and materials are limited so if you are interested, please reserve a spot through our QR code. Looking forward to growing with you!🌱

❄️Winter Programming Update: Public Speaking.🎤

This month, some of our youth are partaking in a class meant to improve confidence, competency, and courage when speaking in front of a crowd. Youth have been working on speaking about themselves, presenting information about the world around them, and speaking with confidence.

This is the first year that we are doing public speaking with all programs together, and it has been a blast getting to see youth from multiple programs getting along and working together.

Sadly, it is only a month long and that month is coming to a close. Look forward to hearing about Craft and Outdoor Exploration tracks next month!

Join @wakantipi and Urban Roots for our annual Seeds and Snowshoes volunteer event at Wakan Tipi!

Spreading native prairie seeds in the winter allows the seeds to go through the freeze/thaw cycle in order to germinate. Enjoy a morning volunteering with community as we care for this sacred place.

This week, we were invited to go ice fishing on Como Lake with @elpis_enterprises

This event was put on by the Saint Paul Police Activities League, @ardentoutdoorgroup and @baztecmn

We had a good time and caught several species like crappies and bluegills.

The East Side Freedom Library and ArT at 967 Payne are thrilled to invite everyone to a celebration honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and recognizing his important legacy and irrevocable impact on our society and democracy.

“FORMAL PROGRAM” – January 20, 12 pm – 1 pm:
Join us for a series of poetry readings by a diverse group of local authors, followed by an inspiring community conversation inviting all to share their ideas and aspirations about freedom, justice, and democracy

OPEN HOUSE – January 20, 11 am – 3 pm:
Watch a selection of videos highlighting excerpts from the most poignant speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; meet the poets and authors in person and check out/purchase some of their books; see a fabulous exhibition of textiles and works on paper by renowned Nigerian artist Tunde Odunlade; at the same time, check out a pop-up show of paintings and photographs by resident artists at ArT @ 967 Payne, assembled and curated for MLK Day 2025; and enjoy some light refreshments while meeting your neighbors and making new friends.

❄️ Youth Programming Updates: Exploration ❄️

🛷 This week we went sledding! Even though it was cold, we had a blast at the Battle Creek snow hill.

🛶 We also visited @urbanboatbuilders to tour their shop and learn about what they do. Then, we tried our hand at latching - it’s such a rewarding process to make your own canoe.

🐦 We also made a spontaneous stop at The Calling loon sculpture outside of Allianz Field to finally see it in person…and ofc we also played in the snow. 😁

Last week our youth interns helped with the "Poem

Last week our youth interns helped with the "Poem For Entangled Living" sculpture that will be on display at the 2025 Art Shanty Festival on Bdé Umáŋ/Lake Harriet.🖌️

The sculpture - shown at last year's event in the second photo - is made up of many small pieces with words painted on them that you can hang from different balance beams on the main structure. Our youth painted some of these art pieces with words in English, Hmong, Thai, Japanese, Spanish, and Somali.

If you want to interact with this sculpture and many others, they will be up on the lake every weekend from January 18th through February 9th. Stop by to check them out!
